Our proprietary Raffles Framework empowers every student with the necessary skills to tackle their high-stakes examinations.

The Raffles Edulab Framework

The Raffles Framework uses a three-pronged framework to build students’ confidence in and mastery of the language.

This is facilitated by our unique approach to teaching which utilises banding, non-rote learning, and exam-oriented preparation.

Common Problems Faced By Different Ability Students

Exam-preparation-for-PSLE-and-O-Levels-at-Raffles-Edulab

Low to Middle-ability Students

Low to middle-ability students face difficulties with more fundamental aspects of the language.

These include areas such as grammar, spelling, punctuation and sentence structure.

Example

I looked out the window. I saw the bus depart.

(student is unable to combine the individual, related sentences as one)

Example

I screamed, I called for help but none came.

(
student wrongly uses a comma instead of writing two separate sentences or using a conjunction)

Example

Turning the corner, the magnificent Sultan Mosque came into view.

(
as the Sultan Mosque cannot turn, the student has attached the participle clause to the wrong subject)

Example

Grammar: Tenses, word form, or subject-verb agreement errors
Misspelling of common words: achieve/disappoint/ embarrass

Middle to High-ability Students

Middle to high-ability students usually have a sound grasp of their fundamentals and have minimal lapses in grammar, spelling, punctuation and sentence construction.

However, they may face difficulties improving the overall sophistication of their written piece. These involve precision of word choice, effective use of figurative language and sentence variation to make their written pieces stand out.

Example

Wrong: The mollified boy cringed when he heard the seams of his shorts rip.

(student has confused the word ‘mollified’ with ‘mortified’)

Example

The boy sprinted down the stairs like a rocket.

(student’s choice of comparison is clumsy as a rocket is usually launched upwards)

Example

His face turned as red as a tomato.

(student is reliant on an overused expression)

Example

I was glad that I had escaped the incident unscathed. I realised it was unwise to risk my safety because of peer pressure. I decided to not join the boys’ group anymore.

(student’s writing sounds repetitive because sentences start the same way)

Example

The long, sharp arrow hit the target accurately.

(student has not included meaningful detail as arrows are usually sharp)

How Our Framework Helps
with Common Problems Faced

Stage 1: Banded Concept Teaching

In the first stage of our proprietary framework, students are taught a concept or writing technique according to their ability levels.

How will Banded Teaching
Benefit My Child?

Empowering Students through Banded Teaching for Personalised Learning

  • All students will be taught the components of a cohesive story, including the introduction, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution.

  • However, banding allows the teacher to shift focus in the teaching segment depending on the ability level of your child.

  • This is important for guided or free writing exercises at the second stage where students will be required to put into practice what they have learnt.

Teaching Aims: Clarity and Accuracy of Expression

  • Low to middle ability students tend to struggle with complex and/or compound sentences. These are sentences which bring together related clauses into one sentence.

  • Well-crafted sentences form the basic building blocks of a student’s written piece.

  • For students who fall into this group, we will deep dive into the hows of sentence construction.

Examples

✅ As I looked out the window, I saw the departing back view of the bus. (subordinating conjunction)

Dashing towards the front door, she hastily bid her mother goodbye. (participle clause)

With dramatic flourish, he gave a deep bow to the audience. (prepositional phrase)

Teaching Aims: Refine Overall Sophistication

  • For middle to high-ability students who have a sound grasp of sentence construction, they will learn techniques to refine their writing ability.

    These include:
    – Similes, metaphors, personification and hyperbole
    – Using vivid verbs and adverbs
    – Plot and character twists
    – Using humour and pathos
    – Flashbacks, flash forwards and foreshadowing
    – Characterisation and character development
    – Varying sentence beginnings

Stage 2: Non-Rote Learning through Simulated Exercises

Non-Rote Learning

Many tuition centres prepare model compositions for students to memorise. At Raffles Edulab, however, lessons will have a dedicated writing portion where students practise the writing technique that is the lesson focus.

Building Confidence Through Structured Practice

  • Students may be ill-equipped to handle full papers with insufficient guidance and practice.

  • Structured exercises allow students to put into practice the concepts and techniques they have been taught without feeling overwhelmed.

  • Our systematic approach helps students to achieve clarity and is aimed at building confidence in the subject.

Stage 3: Application and Exam-Oriented Preparation

Finally, students attempt mock practices and drills to apply skills taught.

  • Builds confidence to attempt questions independently without dedicated guidance

  • Hones recall, question analysis, adaptation and other exam skills

  • Trains students to work under pressure and within timed durations

  • Simulates examination conditions adequately so students are well prepared

Why Tuition and Not Enrichment?

The demands of the curriculum means that there is little time within the confines of each lesson to cultivate a broader appreciation of the English language. Instead, we maximise the time your child spends with us to achieve exam readiness.

Did You Know?

Continuous Writing totals 40 marks and makes up 20% of your child’s overall English score. Together with Situational Writing, Paper 1 is the second most heavily weighted component of the PSLE English Paper.

Skills Needed to Succeed in PSLE Paper 1

Every lesson is thoughtfully planned to maximise the time that your child spends with us. Through his/her time with us, your child will learn how to:

  • Achieve question relevance
  • Craft a cohesive and well-balanced narrative
  • Improve his or her mastery of the language to write accurately
  • Utilise writing techniques to write vividly
  • Build up thematic vocabulary and word/phrase bank
  • Work effectively under timed conditions

Raffles Programmes have an exam-oriented focus and are ultimately aimed at preparing students for the demands of high-stakes examinations.

We Are Here for All Your Questions

We specialise in preparation for the PSLE and GCE ‘O’ Level English paper and cater to students from levels Primary 5 to Secondary 4.

Lessons are capped at a maximum of 8 students for a healthy student-teacher ratio and so that every child enjoys individualised attention.

Your child will be placed into a class best suited for his/her ability level.

Our materials align closely with the MOE schools-based curriculum and are adapted from past-year PSLE and school examination questions.

We do not offer online classes at the moment. We believe that every child benefits from interacting with his/her peers in a purely on-site classroom environment.

Yes, you may wish to sign up for a one-month paid trial before deciding whether or not to commit to the Raffles programme.

We provide free consultations with our experienced team to help you understand your child’s learning needs and goals.

Our writing classes are skills-focused and designed to prepare your child adequately for your child’s graduating milestone exam.

Every lesson has a specific writing focus and dedicated time is set aside weekly for your child to practise the technique taught.

We try not to spoon feed your child model essays from the get-go. Instead, independent writing and application of skills is emphasised first. That being said, supervised guidance is available every step of the way. Depending on your child’s readiness, assistance will be provided at the teacher’s discretion.

Your child will sit for a placement test to help us place him/her in a class best suited for his/her ability level.

Course fees are strictly non-refundable. He/she may wish to attend a replacement class subject to class or teacher availability.
