Creative Writing Jurong West – Since 2015, the Ministry of Education has made changes to the PSLE Continuous Writing component. With the new syllabus, students are required to choose at least one of three given pictures and to write a composition of at least 150 words about the given topic. Past PSLE examination topics have included topics such as ‘A Secret’ and ‘A Considerate Act’.
Thus, with the move toward learning and thinking about real-life scenarios, our classes are carefully adapted to reflect the current syllabus adopted by the Ministry of Education. We also maintain a small class size to suit each student’s pace and keep them engaged throughout the lesson.

Common problem areas in creative writing include:
Students are often unable to produce pieces that follow a well-structured plot and which are appropriately fleshed out with descriptive language and vocabulary. Hence, students need to master both content and language areas to produce a well-written creative writing piece.
Other problems include:
– Lacking a coherent plot with clear beginning, middle and end that illustrates the given topic
(For example, a composition topic such as ‘A Dilemma’ will require students to demonstrate the character’s internal tug-of-war as the bulk of the essay)
– Lack of varied sentence structure (not using ‘-ing’, ‘-ed’, ‘-ly’ sentences)
– Insufficient descriptive phrases and good vocabulary (For example, using the word ‘said’ repeatedly throughout composition)
– An engaging introduction which draws the reader in and appropriate conclusion (not using techniques such as starting with appropriate dialogue or using the weather to foreshadow a problem and to arouse the reader’s curiosity)
– Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation (GSP) problems

Our Methods
We tackle the above creative writing problem areas by gradually exposing the student to increasing levels of difficulty. For example, to tackle weak vocabulary, the tutor first goes through a model composition to encourage students to learn good phrases and to note them down in their notebook. With consistent work, this helps them to build up a word bank that they can make use of in their future pieces.
Students are also encouraged to adapt the plot from a model composition when they first join our classes, rather than to produce a new piece from scratch. Writing a new essay without guided content can be daunting for many students. Students are taught to make use of a story curve when planning their essay.
The following creative writing techniques are also taught in class through quizzes and games to encourage students to learn from one another and to enjoy learning.
– Idiomatic phrases (metaphors and similes)
– Moral dilemma phrases
– Phrases to describe varied intensity of emotions
– Composition techniques
– Slow reveal/build-up
– Show not tell
– Characterisation
– FAT (Feelings, Actions, Thoughts)
